Artangel's commitment to commissioning ambitious new projects extends to working within all forms of broadcast media including film, television, radio and the internet.
Our first film co-production was Matthew Barney's Cremaster 4 in 1995. Douglas Gordon's Feature Film, filmed and recorded with Paris Opera Conductor James Conlon and a hundred musicians, was also shown throughout the world in cinemas and specially constructed exhibition spaces. And Steve McQueen's Super 8 films Caribs' Leap and Western Deep, filmed on location in Grenada and South Africa, are experienced as cinematic installations.
Projects for radio have included Gavin Bryars and Juan Muñoz's – A Man in a Room, Gambling – and a version of John Berger and Simon McBurney's – The Vertical Line. In 2006 BBC Radio Three's The Verb broadcast the premiere of Janice Kerebel's play for insomniacs Nick Silver Can't Sleep.
Artangel works with broadcasters in Britain to find the space to offer artists genuine freedom to make new work for television. Richard Billingham's 46-minute film Fishtank was broadcast on BBC2 in 1998 and enjoyed extensive international exposure.
Director Sophie Fiennes was invited to join Alain Platel & Orlando Gough on their excavation of the hidden choirs of London for Because I Sing. Fiennes' film charted the poignant experiences of London's voices and the communities in which they resound and achieved record viewing figures for Channel 4.
In the summer of 2001 Mike Figgis threw himself into The Battle of Orgreave to direct a powerful record of one of Britain's darkest historical moments seen through the prism of Jeremy Deller's re-enactment.
Artangel's most recent project is Caroline Deeds' documentary for Channel 4 Waste Man showing the making and burning of Antony Gormley's gigantic creation in the seaside town of Margate. Gormley's 25m high structure represents a turning point in Penny Woolcock's Exodus www.themargateexodus.org.uk due to be broadcast in 2007 on Channel 4.
